Thomas B. Coopwood, M.D., F.A.C.S. is retired from a distinguished career as a surgeon, serving the Austin community for over 30 years.
During his career, Dr. Coopwood served as Chief of Surgery at Brackenridge Hospital from 1980 to 1985, Chief of Staff at Brackenridge Hospital in 1986 and Chief of Surgery at St. David's Hospital from 1988 to 1990. Additionally, he was a member of the following societies: Travis County Medical Society (President 1995), Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Texas Surgical Society, and Surgical Society of Austin (President 1992).
Brackenridge Hospital and Travis County Medical Society (TCMS) honored Dr. Coopwood as "Physician of the Year" in 1988 and 2004, respectively. In retirement he has served as President of the Retired Physicians Organization of the Travis County Medical Society and Chairs the ad hoc Disaster Committee for TCMS. He was elected to the Board of Art Alliance Austin and served as its Chair for 2008-09. He is also a member of the Fitness subcommittee of the Dell Jewish Community Center, as well as a member of the 2008-09 Essential Class of Leadership Austin and was recently elected to the board of the Northwest Austin Civic Association (NWACA).
The Austin City Council reappointed Dr. Coopwood to his second term on the Board of Managers in August of 2007, which will expire in December of 2011.
