Travis County Commissioners Court appoints Brenda Coleman-Beattie to the Healthcare District Board of Managers
The Travis County Healthcare District Board of Managers swore in Brenda Coleman-Beattie as the newest member of the board on Thursday, April 23. Coleman-Beattie will fill Dr. Eduardo Sanchez’s term, which expires in 2011. Coleman-Beattie was selected by the Travis County Commissioner’s Court on March 31 as one of the body’s four appointees. All board members are appointed and serve four-year terms.
Brenda Coleman-Beattie is the CEO and Principal Strategy Consultant with 2Thrive4, a strategy consulting company that provides services for private and public sector organizations and individuals. Additionally, she is a behavioral health care consultant. She also previously held the position of Assistant Chief Operating Officer with the Lower Colorado River Authority from 2001 until 2004, as well as several other executive management positions with organizations throughout the country.
Ms. Coleman-Beattie maintains a distinctive record of public service. She has served on the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities as a gubernatorial appointee since 2002. She is presently the board’s chair, a role she has served since December 2008. She previously held the position of chair of the Council’s project development committee from 2006 until 2008. Additionally, she serves as a member of the boards for the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas, The Austin Project, the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work Advisory Council and has been a member of the Zachary Scott Theatre Center Board for more than 10 years. She has also served in leadership positions with the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference. She received the New Milestones Foundation, a group supporting mental health, Champion Award in 2004.
Regarding her experience dealing with health care and particularly mental health issues and the ongoing lack of related resources in Central Texas, Ms. Coleman-Beattie said of her appointment, “My background includes experience with integrated health care that focuses on physical and behavioral health care issues as well as behavioral health care carve-outs. I have an intense interest and commitment to contributing my financial management as well as personal and professional healthcare experience and perspective to the fulfillment of the TCHD vision of Central Texas being a model healthy community.”
The Travis County Healthcare District is governed by a nine-member volunteer Board of Managers. Four of the members are appointed by the Austin City Council and four are appointed by the Travis County Commissioners Court. Both governmental bodies jointly appoint the ninth member. The initial terms of the Managers were staggered so that, as near as possible, one-fourth of the members’ terms expire each year. Reappointments and new appointments to the Board serve four-year terms.
